Words Into Action
2007-2008
Our character counts program has been changed this year to "Words into Action". The students and staff of Melita School are taking their character out to the community.  Each class has planned events that in some way help our community and show our good character.  The following are short summaries of each project.

WAY TO GO MELITA SCHOOL!!!

Kindergarten (Day 1)

Since September, the Kindergarten students  made two visits to the Melita & Area Personal Care Home and in May the residents were invited to the Kindergarten classroom.
The students were always excited and always wanted to be well prepared for their visits with the residents.  The two groups would visit , read ,  complete crafts and of course food was always available to finish off the visit.  The students were so excited to have the residents to their classroom and the residents thanked us many times for this opportunity.  We would also like to thank Leah Stovin  for all of her work in this project.  We were all rewarded in this wonderful experience.  We are planning for next year.

Kindergarten Day 2 Class
Penny Drive to Collect Pennies for the Pool
Our class raised $91.00 by collecting our Pennies for the Pool. We had a lot of fun at our " Penny Party". We weighed our pennies, measured different items with them, and did many other math activities with them. Thank you to all who donated your pennies to use for this "Words Into Action" project.

Grade 1
Grade One students are making cards to send to local residents. The Grade Five students visited the grade one room to help grade one students assemble Christmas cards for Melita Personal Care residents.

Grade 2

The Grade 2 Class put their words into action by helping "The Community In Bloom" organization.  Susan Cairns is a committee member and a classroom parent.  We thank her for all her work and organizing to make our project possible. We painted birdhouses in our classroom.  The birdhouses had been built by Henry Dickenson.  Thanks Henry, the students were very impressed with your job. We hung the birdhouses in Central Park, with parent help.  Thanks to Larry Kirkup, Jonina Elliott, Marie Tilbury and Deb Cobbledick.  We then went to the Caboose at the entrance to River Park.  We  planted some flowers, in planters and in the flowerbed in front of the caboose. You will notice the Canadian colours and a "M" for Melita in the flowerbed arrangement.

The students did a good job to help brighten our community.  Thank-You Grade 2's!

Grade 3
The Grade Three class has been visiting the Melita Lodge once a month since September for their Words into Action Project.  We have read, played cards, sang, done puzzles, done crafts,  played bingo and entertained the residence.   Our last visit is on May 28th and we will be having a special  celebration.  The students look forward to their monthly visits.

Grade 4
The Grade 4 class decided to focus their Words into Action project on Centre Park.  In May we went to Centre Park to clean it up.  This was in conjunction with the town wide clean-up.  Many bags of garbage were collected and the students realized the value of picking up after themselves and keeping a public area clean.  The students also painted birdhouses in cooperation with Communities in Bloom.  In June we will be going back to Centre Park to have our birdhouses put up around the park and to plant flowers in the kids flower garden. The students enjoyed these activities and talked about the community value to each.

Grade 5
The Grade five students put their “Words into Action” by fundraising for Trick or Treat Unicef.  The students held a bake /craft table at the Kinsmen Craft Sale on Saturday, October 20th,.  They raised $268.32 at the table.  The Kinsmen donated the $20.00 table and Harvey and Judy Jones donated $20.00.  This gave them a grand total of $308.32.  They are also held a Halloween Fun Day for K to 6 on October 31st.  This event was a lot of fun and it brought in another$63.50.  A total of $373.87 was sent to Unicef from the Grade five class.

Grade 6
This year, the Grade 6 class decided to collect can tabs for our Words into Action project. This venture is in conjunction with the Tabs for Wheelchairs Program coordinated by Gwen Buccini from Holy Cross School in Winnipeg.
The tabs that we have collected this year will go towards a Sport Wheelchair for Ian, a grade 8 student at Arthur A. Leach School. If you have a collection of tabs, please bring them to the school or to any grade 6 student. This year we have collected over 60 000 tabs.
Thank you for saving your tabs!

Grade 7
The Gr.7 Words into Action project focused on the environment. The students were broken into groups of four and the first Thursday of each month, volunteered to help out in the Melita Recycling Depot. They began their project in October and completed it in May. The students all participated enthusiastically, and we feel that we were apart of making our world a cleaner and better place. Congratulations to the Gr. 7 students on their efforts and volunteerism.

Grade 8
The Grade 8 Class decided to raise money to build a well in India.  Each student took on extra chores and/or responsibilities to raise $25.00.  As a class we sent $781.00 to sopar, the organization responsible for building the well, and we are presently waiting for the picture of the well.  We would also like to thank the Gr. 9 boys who donated the funds from their Words into Action project to our cause.

Grade 9
The grade 9's were divided into three groups for separate projects. One group organized and ran a bake sale over the noon hour and donated the fund to the grade 8 well project.  Another group cleaned up outside of the school in the fall by gathering garbage.
Grade 10
This year the Grade 10 students were eager to celebrate Family Day by hosting a Winter Carnival for the students & families of Melita and surrounding area.  An unusually dry winter resulted in this project being canceled.  This group then proceeded to build a new flowerbed at the front of the school.  With new soil, landscape bricks, perennials, and Inukshuks (built by the Grade 5's in their Grade 1 year),  they hope that this next stage of school beautification will be appreciated by past and present students alike.

Grade 11

This fall, students in the Grade 11 homeroom decided that they would paint the dressing rooms and players' area of the Melita Arena as their Words Into Action project.  The students felt it was important to contribute to the place where so many of them have spent so much of their winters.  Armed with brushes, rollers, and several gallons of paint, they completed the job in a morning and had a lot of fun doing it.

Grade 12
The Grade 12 class decided they would like to fix up and put ice in the outdoor rink that is located right beside our school.  Under Mr.Trusslers direction the project was a success as the community used the rink extensively over the winter.
